The study cohort was massive, comprising 33,833 veterans who met the criteria for inclusion. Within this group, 12,287 patients were identified as nicotinamide users, while a control group of 21,479 patients had not used the supplement.

The findings revealed a 14% overall decrease in the risk of developing new skin cancers among those taking the supplement. While this figure is slightly lower than the 23% reported in the 2015 ONTRAC study, the scale of the VA study provides a more statistically significant look at the supplement’s impact across a diverse, aging population.

"These results would really shift our practice from starting it once patients have developed numerous skin cancers to starting it earlier," Wheless stated. However, Wheless also cautioned that nicotinamide is not a "one-size-fits-all" solution. The data indicated that roughly half of the patients who develop one skin cancer will never develop another, meaning that universal supplementation might not be necessary. The research team also examined a specific sub-group of 1,334 patients who were immunocompromised, largely due to solid organ transplants. Furthermore, reducing the surgical burden on elderly patients improves their quality of life by avoiding the scarring, potential infections, and anxiety associated with repeated procedures.
